Omnivore Mix
[Back to Lizard Care Sheets]

Several species of omnivorous reptiles are now commonly available as domestically bred animals.  This recipe is for a mixture we regularly feed to our tegus, blue-tongue skinks, and occasionally to our box turtles.  It looks awful and smells worse but the animals devour it and their growth is excellent when fed this food.

Ingredients

-1 1/2 of ripe cantaloupe or honeydew melon finely chopped
-1 cup mashed ripe fruit/berries (see list below)
-1 can low cal dog food or 1-2 lbs cooked ground turkey
-2 cans of snails thoroughly rinsed with water
-1 1/2 cups chopped leafy greens (see list below)
-2 tsp RepCal Calcium with vitamin D3
-2 tsp RepCal Herptivite multivitamin

Fruits/berries - banana, pear, apple, strawberries, blue berries, raspberries, mango, and kiwi.

Greens - Dandelion greens, endive, escarole, collared greens, Swiss chard, bok choy, and romaine lettuce.

Instructions

Mash the banana and or berries and add chopped melon.  Add low cal dog food or ground turkey and mix thoroughly.  Add snails, chopped greens, calcium powder, and multivitamins.  Mix thoroughly and freeze in individual meal sized portions.  The lizards will typically eat this out of a dish.
