Reptilia's
Extra Curricular Programs
Reptilia's
extra curricular programs can be taught as an after school program
or a lunch time program. Each session is approximately 60 minutes in
length. Children participating in these programs will have the
opportunity to interact with and learn about reptiles and
amphibians.
They
will gain an advantage in the classroom because the sessions will
focus on topics they are expected to learn about in class. For
example, they will learn about the characteristics of reptiles and
amphibians, the life cycles of these animals, and more. Subject
material is chosen based upon the age range of students
participating to ensure overlap with the science and technology
curriculum. However, we will use reptiles to teach them about these
concepts in a fun and interactive manner that will enrich their
learning experience. The following is an outline of the topics that
can be addressed over the 8 week period:
Session
1 – Introduction to Reptiles
Participants
will be introduced to different types of reptiles including snakes,
lizards, turtles, tortoises, and crocodilians. They will be given a
general overview of the group.
Session
2 – Lizards
This
session will focus on lizards as a group. Participants will be
introduced to different types of lizards and they will learn about
the many ways in which they make a living. Animals to be used
include Sal a young Savannah Monitor, Marie a Monkey-tailed Skink,
Ferdinand a Frilled Dragon, and more.
Session
3 – Turtles, Tortoises, and Crocodilians
This
session will focus turtles, tortoises, and crocodilians.
Participants will learn about these animals and their environments.
Students will meet Albert and African Spur-thighed Tortoise, Sheldon
a Red-eared Slider Turtle, Angus our Alligator Snapping Turtle, and
Lou an American Alligator.
Session
4 – Snakes
This
session will feature Julia Squeezer the Boa Constrictor, Kellogg the
Corn Snake, Buffalo Bill the Bull Snake, and many others.
Participants will learn about snakes and the true nature of these
wonderful animals.
Session
5 – Introduction to Amphibians
Participants
will be introduced to different species of frogs, toads, and
salamanders. We will discuss the characteristics of these animals
and compare them to reptiles and mammals.
Session
6 – Life Cycles
The
life cycles of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and plants will be
compared. We will discuss similarities and differences in the way
these animals grow and change.
Session 7 – Senses and Sense Organs
Participants
will learn all about the senses and the way they are used by
animals, including humans, to gather information about the
environment. The sensory abilities of different animals will be
compared. Animals featured in this session will include snakes with
infra-red heat sensing abilities, lizards with an incredible sense
of smell, and more.
Session
8 – Wrap up Session
We
will review the major concepts discussed during the previous
sessions. Students will all have the opportunity to have their
photograph taken with one of the animals present. The photographs
will go home with the students along with a certificate!
