Reptilia X Toronto Wildlife Center Help Snakes Over the Winter Season!

December 11, 2019

Toronto Wildlife Center is a crucial steward of the human impact on our wild neighbors. The GTA is home to a wide array of wildlife, including reptiles and amphibians! Although many species can do quite well living in urban areas, there are also countless unnatural hazards that cause them to harm and threaten their continuing survival.

Some Examples of Human Hazards that Impact Snakes in Urban Areas:

  • Human fear and persecution – actively attacking snakes
  • Human curiosity and love for animals – taking native species illegally from the wild to be pets
  • Run over by cars, bikes, and lawnmowers
  • Attacked by pets
  • Getting stuck in glue traps meant for other pests
  • Burns from backyard fire pits (woodpiles are a favorite hiding place)
  • Attempts to overwinter in people’s basements

TWC provides a critical resource for GTA communities, rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing wildlife of all kinds, including some that aren’t always as well-liked or as quickly thought of such as snakes. From snakes that need a place to stay over the winter to a snake that accidentally hitched a ride upon a shipment from Arkansas, Toronto Wildlife Center is a true conservation center, giving animals that would have otherwise died or ended up in captivity a second chance to get back to the wild and bolster their population!

Reptilia is proud to help provide the donation of care equipment and financial support to the excellent expertise of TWC and their rehabilitation of our threatened Ontario snake species!

Have you encountered a native reptile or amphibian in distress? Contact the TWC at (416) 631-0662 and help them to give that animal a second chance!
