Adopt, Don’t Shop! Reptilia’s Reptile Adoption Program
Through our reptile adoption program, we help members of the public reach out to us when they have a pet that they can no longer keep. Although we attempt to provide homes for as many animals as we can, the zoo only has so much space. Unfortunately, most animal shelters may not have the knowledge, or facilities, to help these animals and locate new homes. We help reptiles find their forever families!
How does the Reptile Adoption Program Work?
The Reptile Adoption Program is a 3 step process that helps you effectively provide long-term care.
Step 1: First, you must show a minimum habitat set up for the reptile. If you are unsure about what the minimum habitat requirements for a reptile you may visit our adoption area and see the basic requirements for each reptile or contact the Reptile Store at Phone: 905-761-6223 (x220), or by E-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org
When meeting for the first time we may ask some basic questions to gauge a first impression, basic reptile knowledge, and general attitude towards reptiles and animals alike. We absolutely love our reptiles, even the ones that will only remain with us temporarily until they find a new home, and we reserve the right to refuse an animal to someone that we feel cannot provide appropriate lifetime care.
Step 2: You will attend a brief interview regarding the well-being and general maintenance of the reptile and its habitat. We have comprehensive books available for purchase at our facility. These books will teach you about behavior, physical traits, physical changes during growth, eating patterns, and much more! We will review the adoption agreement with you line by line and have you initial each requirement.
Step 3: Upon a successful interview, you will receive a date when you can take your newly adopted reptile home! There is a minor adoption fee of $60, which will go towards the care of the other reptiles waiting for adoption. Then we will prepare a suitable container to safely take your reptile home. You will also receive a Reptilia made care package for the animal you are adopting. The care package will include general care information as well as contact information for Reptilia and veterinary services.
- A waiting list is available if you want a reptile that isn’t currently ready for adoption
- Although there can certainly be exceptions, typically a single family may only adopt one animal
- Each animal species will have a ‘mandatory’ and ‘highly recommended’ list of setup needs. You can purchase a set up from Reptilia or prove you have an adequate setup by taking a selfie with it
