Vaughan, Ontario — Reptilia Vaughan recently welcomed a film crew from Red Trillium Films Inc. for the production of the upcoming documentary BITE! STING! CURE!, with one of the zoo’s most remarkable ambassadors taking centre stage.
Tequila, Reptilia’s resident Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum), participated in filming for the documentary, exploring a custom-built set designed specifically for the production. The experience provided valuable enrichment while allowing filmmakers to capture the unique behaviours of one of North America’s only venomous lizard species.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see animals like Tequila helping people connect with wildlife in new ways,” said Ashley Maika, Community Engagement Coordinator at Reptilia. “This documentary not only showcases an amazing species, but also helps people better understand the important role reptiles play in our ecosystems and how studying them can even contribute to advances in human medicine.”
During filming, Reptilia staff worked alongside the production team to demonstrate how Gila Monster venom functions and discuss the species’ ecological importance. Although famous for their venomous bite, Gila Monsters are slow-moving, secretive reptiles that spend much of their lives sheltered underground in the deserts of the southwestern United States and Mexico.
Research on Gila Monster venom has also contributed to advances in modern medicine, including the development of treatments for type 2 diabetes, demonstrating how wildlife can play an important role in improving human health.
Reptilia is proud to have supported the production of BITE! STING! CURE! and looks forward to seeing Tequila appear on screen when the documentary is released. Collaborations like these help showcase the important role zoological facilities play in education, conservation, scientific outreach, and public engagement.
