Local Heroes Rescue Rare Turtle in Wasaga Beach – A Heartwarming Community Effort

Whitby, ON — October 6, 2025 — A remarkable rescue effort near Wasaga Beach has given a rare Fly River Turtle a second chance at life, thanks to the quick thinking, compassion, and determination of local residents.

The turtle, a species native to Papua New Guinea and northern Australia, was discovered struggling in a local lake by a group of neighbours and family members. Recognizing that the animal was clearly out of place and in distress, the group immediately coordinated a rescue effort and safely secured the weakened turtle before arranging for her transfer to Reptilia Zoo Whitby.

Affectionately named “Dinosaur” by one of the youngest members of the rescue team, the turtle is now receiving specialized care at Reptilia. Initial assessments suggest she had been surviving on her own for an extended period of time. Numerous mussels attached to her skin and shell, combined with her overall condition, indicate she had likely been living in the wild for quite some time before being discovered.

While the exact circumstances that led to Dinosaur being found in a Canadian lake remain unknown, the case is believed to be another example of an exotic reptile being abandoned outdoors. Species such as the Fly River Turtle are not adapted to Canada’s climate and cannot survive long-term in local waterways, making timely intervention critical to their welfare.

“This rescue is a testament to the kindness and awareness of our community,” said Reptilia staff. “Without the actions of the individuals who found her, Dinosaur may not have survived much longer. Their willingness to step in and help made all the difference.”

Although Dinosaur still faces a long road to recovery, there have already been encouraging signs. Since arriving at Reptilia and being provided with appropriate warmth and care, she has begun showing increased energy and activity.

Reptilia extends its sincere gratitude to everyone involved in Dinosaur’s rescue, transport, and transfer to Whitby. Their efforts not only saved the life of a remarkable animal but also helped prevent potential impacts on local ecosystems.

Dinosaur’s story serves as an important reminder of the responsibilities associated with exotic animal ownership and the need for humane alternatives when owners can no longer care for their animals. It is also a powerful example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together to help an animal in need.
