Whitby, Ontario — March 7, 2026 — While the ground has barely begun to thaw, the first abandoned reptiles of the season have already arrived at Reptilia’s doorstep.
On the morning of Saturday, March 7, a bin containing three ball pythons was discovered abandoned at the front entrance of Reptilia Whitby shortly before the facility opened to the public. Accompanying the animals was a note stating they had been found on the side of the road.
Although the snakes were alert and alive when discovered, they arrived cold and showing signs of health concerns that will require veterinary attention. Reptilia staff immediately brought the animals indoors and began the careful process of gradually acclimating them to appropriate temperatures.
“It’s disheartening that someone can look at an animal and decide that the value of its life is less than the convenience of leaving it to fend for itself or simply hoping someone else will find it,” said Ashley Maika, Community Engagement Coordinator for Reptilia Zoo & Education Centre.
Animal Welfare Services has been notified of the abandonment and may assume custody of the animals or allow them to remain at Reptilia while an investigation is conducted.
For the time being, the snakes will remain in Reptilia’s care.
The trio arrived just ahead of the busy March Break period. They will not be placed on display while they undergo quarantine and veterinary evaluation.
“The quarantine process takes time and requires multiple tests,” Maika added. “It also requires staff to monitor and care for these animals every day, sometimes administering treatments daily. We’re fortunate to be able to provide this level of care through funds generated by the zoo’s programs, as we do not receive government funding.”
Ball pythons are among the most common snakes kept as pets and, unfortunately, among the most frequently displaced from homes. Reptilia takes in multiple ball pythons each year but is forced to turn down dozens more due to capacity limitations.
Incidents like this highlight the ongoing need for conversations about responsible pet ownership and reptile care. Through its educational programs and guest experiences, Reptilia remains committed to inspiring a greater understanding of reptiles and promoting responsible stewardship of these often-misunderstood animals.
